I hope you’re having a wonderful holiday week with people you love. Today I’m sharing a game I’ve played with many of my loved ones over the years. It can be quick and frenetic. As you may have heard, my personal motto is, “It’s not fun if you don’t go fast“. This game can definitely be fast.
When I was a teen one of my sister-in-laws shared a game with me I’d never heard of before: Fluxx.
I enjoyed this card game very much – each play is very different. The rules and goal of the game constantly change. Over the years I’ve collected many of the spin-off games, so I’ll be reviewing those as well.
Here’s the breakdown:
- Players: 2-5
- Age: 8+
- Playtime: 5-30 minutes

While the basic rules are simple and the cards’ themes are common items, the game changes so much it can be difficult to follow. I wouldn’t recommend it for younger children – it’s easy to make someone else win. The goal of the game changes frequently.
The colors and artwork aren’t incredibly important in this game – it’s not necessary for En Chroma glasses for this game. There is an incredible amount of text and it’s not very large, so this is definitely one that you might want reading glasses for. Since there’s so much text, as someone who’s mildly dyslexic I can attest it might be easy to misread something.
With larger parties the game can get a little long between rounds, especially if it’s Draw 4+2 and Play All then the rules and goals may change significantly between your turns. While it may be important to watch what happens as someone else may make you win by accident, it can be a little tedious.
Since the rules change so frequently, it’s difficult to really judge the mechanics. Despite the rules changing so often, they seem to work and there are failsafes to eliminate rules that don’t serve you (at least occasionally).
I have several versions I’m going to review in the future. I will note, however, that my husband and I have decided that we want to make sure people play the original before they play any themed versions. Many of the themed versions have situations that are very specific to the game and don’t translate to the other games. It’s a little much for the first play through.
Fluxx is a fun card game with ever changing rules. These games are pretty cost effective considering their replay value.
Happy Gaming! Play On!
